Ray, when someone asks you if you're a god, you say YES!

When I get home from a run, Jack always greets me with, "Did you have a good run, Mommy?" which delights me to no end. Lately, he has been following up that question with, "Did you win?"

One school of thought would be that I should answer thusly:
Sweetie, when I go running, most of the time, it's not a race. What I'm doing is improving my fitness, enjoying the fresh air, and relieving stress so I can be a better mommy. I do have goals, but instead of challenging someone else, I am really challenging myself. And with that, I am always a winner.

However, I prefer this approach:
Yes.

I mean, come on: did you see anybody finish ahead of me?

Great story! I have a friend that has done some triathlons, after her most recent one I said "how did you do?", she went on to tell me she did ok and what she could have done better and so on. I responded "Clearly you don't get how this works. Did you finish?" She said "Yes". I said "Did you have fun?" She said "Yes". Then I said, "Well then you WON!!!"

My girls always want to know if I win too...

Yeah, trying to get kids understand PR's or just running to run or running to beat last year's time is next to impossible. Sometimes yes is the only answer that prevents LONG conversations with no energy.

My MOTHER still asks if I win races.

ROFLMAO!! Good thinking! Because before you know it, they'll be on to us and then we'll have to explain that we're really "losers" LOL

Cutie pie.

I remember finishing Marathon Number 1, The Boy walked up to me and asked me the same thing. "Did you win?"

My reply was "I sure did." The way I see it if I can though it out 26.2 miles, at the very least it's a moral victory.
:)
Unfortunately now he's 7 and he gets it. Too bad.

That is the easier answer. My daughter was gving me a hard time because I "looked like I was only jogging real slow"....when she saw me finish the marathon. Hard to explain 26.2 to a 6 year old.

HI Betsy

I just love this post. My nephew used to always ask me "Did you win Uncle Bill?" and when I would say that I hadn't won (or even come close for that matter:-)), what could I have won. Even thinking about it now makes me laugh.

YOU are absolutely ALWAYS a winner and just a little better able to cope with life (the good and the sometimes not so good) after a run.

Best of luck with the family and the running.

The latest round of Mississippi floods made me think of the same thing happening 15 years ago, when we met. So I googled you, and here I am. Hope all is well - glad to read you're running again. Great blog. I am going to use it for my own running motivation.

Too cute! You should have him make you some medals he can give you when you "win."

HA HA - my kids know me well enough to ask if I got last place. :D I say, "no, mommy won today!" Some day I will tell them what I mean by "win".
