That's Hot

I live in the midwest and am training for a September marathon. That means there's no getting around it: I need to run in the hot, humid, sticky, nasty dog days of summer.

As Nicole Richie (who I just know would be my BFF if we ever hung out, because girlfriend is hilarous and I would take her out for margaritas and nachos because she should not get so thin ever again) would say, "That's hot."

Thus, the theme for this week's
Take it and Run Thursday: running in the heat.

Amy had a great post earlier this week with some excellent practical advice for running in the heat. I can't even imagine improving upon it, so I won't try. Instead, I will offer Betsy's Salute to Hot Weather Post-Run Food. There are some foods that could not be more delicious than after a hot weather run.

1. Popsicles. I love popsicles under any circumstances, but after a long run in the heat, they are heavenly. There are popsicles in my freezer at all times, usually two boxes. That is because Jack prefers Spider-Man popsicles

and I cannot imagine anything more vile than a black popsicle. I tend to buy the 100% Fruit Juice kind, but either way, they are so fabulously cold after a hot run.

2. Watermelon. Ice cold out of the fridge, and with plenty of liquid in it to replenish lost fluids. Mmm.

3. Gatorade. Like Amy said, Gatorade never tastes better than after a long run.

4. Ice cream. Enough said.

5. Apple slices. Magically take care of weird gumminess in your mouth and taste amazing as well.

What about you catlickers? What's your favorite post hot run treat?

I prefer freezer pops, the ones in the long clear tube that you buy unfrozen. I still have about 90 of them in my freezer from back in November when I had e. coli food poisoning and was thirsty alllllllllll the time yet couldn't stand the taste of water for one more second. A freezer pop saved me at about mile 8 of the half marathon in VA Beach last summer, and I've been a big fan ever since!

Ooh, I really like this take on the "hot" topic! I did the Boilermaker last year (a 15K July race) and they had spectators handing out popsicles DURING the race, which was a lot of fun. And of course, ice cream is my favorite treat after any run, whether it's in hot or cold weather.

Good one! Houston is SO hot and muggy. Gotta love it when the news people tell you to stay inside as much as possible.

I love freezing gatorade and leaving it out by my start, so when i get back, its the perfect slushiness to gulp down.

Cold Orange slices are also simply divine after a nice hot run.

You missed only the best soda known to man-kind and the best post-race pick-me-up to chugging water, ice cold Diet Coke with Splenda. The only other alternative is running with a bag of ice on your head or even just in your hands like I did at Bix last year.

Those are very tasty treats. I think I'd purposely run in the heat so be able to have some. So yum!

Coca Cola---often used after a ngiht of lots of drinkign too....its jsut delish- - - ecspecially if you can get a McD's fountain CocaCola----I sont' do diet. . .its worse for you & disgusting!

BUT, I'll also take, Ice cold water--half frozen gatorade & getting all my hot sticky clothes off. . . . I'm more about being RE-clothed in normal, DRY clothes. . . .

BUT I'll be trying the apples for the VERY reason you stated.

A tepid shower. Sounds odd but it's what I do...

I like fruit... plums, peaches... but now I have the idea of real fruit juice popsicles... oh adding to the grocery list.

You nailed it with popsicles--never met one I didn't love and slobber over.

How did beer not make this list?

I love running in the heat. Sure beats these midwestern cold spells. Call me crazy.

I love taking off my shoes and then jumping into our pool - running clothes and all and then sitting there drinking a water, soda, beer and pool snacks. It makes it all worth it.
