Tagged
Who wants to hear six random facts about me?
I knew you'd be excited, Internet!
1. I am totally afraid of bats. Seriously, they freak me out big time. The evil beady little eyes, the noise, the way they swoop down on you. Oh, sweet Yoda, I cannot deal with bats. I will not go into any tourist destination with the words "Caves" or "Caverns" in it because I am sure they are chock-full of bats. Also, the summer after I graduated from high school, my mom's house had a bat problem for a while - we are talking bats hanging off the crown molding, people - and I seriously was about to move out.
2. At least 50 times in my life (seriously), someone has asked the question, "Hey, Betsy - you'd probably know this. What is the name of those guys in the balcony on The Muppet Show?"
And, duh, of course I know. Statler and Waldorf. I love, love, love the Muppets and take a tremendous amount of pride in the fact that Jack does, too.
3. I love all autumn squash. When it's in season, I will buy squash at random, whatever looks interesting, because it always tastes great to me. I like it with butter, brown sugar, and raisins.
4. I am famous for my desserts. I make a cheesecake that weighs about eight pounds, chocolate chip cookies that once got me a job, and delightful pumpkin cake roll, to name just a few.
5. The fictional characters I most relate to are Lisa Simpson and Hermione Granger from the Harry Potter books.
6. Despite the propensity for endurance running and the toughness therin, I am a fainter. I've fainted after giving blood, during a golf lesson on a hot day, and once on the Metro, in which I collapsed, landed on my face, and got a black eye (I did get a seat after that move). I can come very close to fainting if I haven't eaten in a while or if I stand up too fast. I am a delicate flower.

Absolut(ly) Fit just did an asston of memes and gave a random, "whatever, you're tagged if you want to be" tag. Seeing as how this means I wouldn't have to come up with content on my own today, I'm calling myself tagged.

She got things done.
That's right, Internet: I am so efficient that I can do this in just four words. I take an inordinate amount of delight in making lists and crossing things off of them. I multi-task and get more done before 10:00 on Saturday morning than many people do all day. And, at work, my job is to handle project management, which basically boils down to telling other people what to do and when to do it. My unofficial title is The Badger because I badger people to do their work.
Share seven random or weird facts about yourself.
And a running one...
1. How would you describe your running 10 years ago? In a word, sporadic. I was 23 ("twenty-three and so tired of life, such a shame to throw it all away...") and foolishly devoted to a job in which I was treated like crap. Working from 8:00 to 10:00 every day (when not hiding in the secret bathroom where I could cry undetected) left little time for running, but every once in a while I'd bust out a 3 miler.
2. What were your best and worst race experiences? I think my best race experience was my recent trisko, the Quad Cities Distance Classic. My expectations were pretty low going into it, considering that I was injured. Then, the weather was terrible - freezing cold with high winds. And yet, I gutted it out and finished with a time of 2:05, which I am very proud of. I think my worst experience was probably last year's Race For the Cure. I have two words for you, which anyone else who has given birth can understand: stress incontinence. Nuff said - in fact, too much said.
3. What are the best and worst pieces of advice you've been given about running? I've gotten lots of good advice in my 20+ years of running. One thing that comes to mind came from my high school cross country coach, the awesomely named Coach Quick. Quick told us that in order to run well, you have to have strong arms. He had us lift weights, which I have always felt made me stronger. I also know that when I get tired, I tend to hunch up my shoulders, so I remember to drop them down and use better form, which makes me less fatigued. Bad advice tends to come from non-runners, who say dumbass things like, "I wouldn't run unless somebody was chasing me." I smile as if I haven't heard that one a thousand times already and secretly feel superior to them.
4. Tell us something surprising about yourself that not many people would know. I just did a big pile of random above, so I'll keep this running-related. Um... I always put on mascara before I go running. I may turn into a beet-red sweaty mess, but I will look much cuter and more awake due to the mascara.

- I love to peel things. Chipping paint. Nail polish. Sunburned flesh. If it peels, I cannot resist it.
- You know the way snobby people curl their little fingers while drinking tea? Sure you do. Anyway, the pinky fingers on both of my hands are like that pernamently. I was born that way, and they do not straighten. I am pretty sure this is not the only thing keeping me from being a concert pianist.
- When I was pregnant, one of my biggest cravings was for ham sandwiches. This should have been my first indication that I was having a boy, because Wasser men love ham.
- I am really good at counted cross stitch, but haven't done it in years.
- I have a dresser drawer devoted entirely to camisoles.

- I'm 33 years old, but am only on my second car.

Commuter Cam
My friend Tyler recently issued the challenge for people to photograph, then blog their commutes. Fun, right? Liana was up for it, too. So, with that, here's how I get to work.
The start is always the same - here's the driveway leading away from Stately Wasser Manor.
The view from the walkway to my office is really cool. You can see the Figge Art Museum...
And the River Music Experience building, which is also home of Mojo's, where you can get the finest chocolate chip cookies in all of downtown Davenport... provided you get there before they sell out.
And we made it! There's my desk!
Now, on other days, my commute is slightly different. The next day, I had a partner.
We pass Dr. Gyros, where Steve and I occasionally have prescriptions filled for deliciousness
And Whitey's Ice Cream. Mmm, Whitey's.
Jack is safely dropped off at school
and my drive continues. This is Rock Island High School, and I remember running track meets right here.
From there, I get on the Centennial Bridge, which is much prettier than the Government Bridge. I've run across this one, too, because it's cool to think I can hit two states on a run.
That day I took a different route home because I had a meeting. I was happy to get a shot of this building, The Stripping Solution. It's like the answer to the I'm A Single Mom And I Just Want To Make My Way Through College Problem.
Here's yet another bridge across the Mississippi. I'll run over it when I do the Quad Cities Marathon in September.
So, that's how I get to and from work. There's plenty to look at, and it's even nicer when it's not ass-cold out.

I pass this new store called Gameology. It's where you can hang out late into the night pounding Red Bull and playing Halo or whatever. I am semi-terrified of it.
This is a crappy picture, but I had to post it anyway. It's of a tattoo parlor, and 90% of the time, there are heavily tatted guys hanging out in front smoking. The tattoo parlor is almost exactly one mile away from my house, so I always feel excited when I get to it out running. I feel a connection to it.
These are some of the dorms at Augustana College, where Steve works.
Then I pass a train yard.
This bridge is called the Government Bridge (or something like that) and it goes to Arsenal Island, as well as over the Mississippi into Iowa, where I work. I was too chicken to take pictures of the outposts at the Arsenal because I didn't want to look suspicious.
The bridge is about a thousand years old. I've run across it before. The surface of it is a grate. You know that creepy feeling you get when you walk over a subway grate, like you can imagine plummeting down into the Morlock tunnels? I had that feeling the entire time I ran across it. It even seems to shake. And if you look down, you can actually see the river. It is terrifying.

House Meme
I can't resist a good meme, and Daisy Boneshas one today. It's all about houses, you guys.
1. When you walk in your front door, which room do you enter?
There's a nice sized foyer at the front of the house. Turn left for the family room, right for the dining room.
2. Do you have a dishwasher?
Of course.
3. Is your living room carpeted or does it have hardwood floor?
There is a sort of oatmeal-colored carpet that covers the living room and most of the first floor. The kitchen is a very pretty Pergo, and the upstairs is all hardwoods.
4. Do you keep your kitchen knives on the counter or in a drawer?
We have a block of knives on the counter, plus a magnet holding more one the wall. Keeping knives in a drawer would be asking for trouble with Jack!
5. House, apartment, duplex or trailer?
House. Or, if you prefer, a Stately Manor.
6. How many bedrooms is it?
Four. Steve's and my room, Jack's room, a guest room, and the office. I am so glad to have a seperate office. In Previous Stately Wasser Manor, we had the office in the front room of the house, which afforded no privacy for Steve when he was writing.
7. Gas stove or electric?
Gas.
8. How big is the yard?
Big. I love it so much. Will love it even more when we build a deck.
9. What size TV is in the living room?
Freaking huge. It's 36" and weighs a million pounds.
10. Are your plates in the same cupboard as your cups?
No, we have a really fun mishmash of coffee mugs.
11. Is there a coffee maker sitting on your kitchen counter?
Of course there is. Otherwise I might die.
12. What color is your home painted?
White with black shutters. I would like to repaint the shutters green some day.
13. What room is your computer in?
The office. This is one of the few rooms that Steve and I painted. Three of the walls are a rich chocolate brown, with an accent wall in light blue. It is so pretty, you guys.
14. Are there pictures hanging in your living room?
Of course there are. We have some coffee-related pictures hanging over our lovely orange chenille couch. And the Family Wall is pretty much what you'd expect - a big grouping of pictures of our family.
15.) Are there any themes found in your home?
Our family room is decorated with movie posters - the original Star Wars trilogy, plus movie posters for Jack in his play area - Shrek, Toy Story, Cars, and Spider-Man. Jack's room has the dual themes of Elmo and Star Wars. We hung up a bunch of autographed Star Wars pictures in his room and it looks awesome. Oh, and the guest room is very beachy looking.
16. What kind of laundry detergent do you use?
Cheer, in a big-ass box from Sam's.
17. Do you use dryer sheets?
I don't, because I think they're unneccesary and not at all green. Plus bad for performance fabrics. But Steve uses them.
18. Do you have any curtains in your home?
Brown faux suede curtains in our bedroom, blue ones in Jack's room, and white ones in the guest room. I'd like to get something to add a shot of color to the dining room, maybe a rich orange.
19. What color is your fridge?
Stainless steel.
20. Is your house clean?
Yes, and will be even more so after the cleaning ladies come tomorrow.
21. What room is the most neglected?
The finished part of our basement. We don't use it for anything.
22. Are the dishes in your sink/dishwasher clean or dirty?
It is my mission in life to always have the dishwasher emptied. Too many dishes pile up, and it's chaotic, plus I then have to stop and empty, then fill the dishwasher before I can work in the kitchen. Things are now as they should be - no dishes in the sink, a few dirty dishes in the dishwasher.
23. How long have you lived in your home?
Since July 2, 2007.
24. Where did you live before?
Temporary Wasser Manor, aka my mom's house.
25. Do you have one of those fluffy toilet lid covers on your toilet?
Those gross me out.
26. Do you have a scale anywhere in your home?
Yes, in the closet in the guest room.
27. How many mirrors are in your house?
Three? One in each bathroom, plus a full-length mirror in the bedroom. We had tons of decorative mirrors in Previous Stately Wasser Manor.
28. Look up. What do you see?
Ceilings with that swirly texture to them.
29. Do you have a garage?
No way would I live in the midwest without a two-car garage.
30. Are you planning on moving anytime soon?
No, and possibly never again.

Weird Girl is right that I just moved to where I am now, but I do think I can scrape together my five favorite places of the moment. In time, I know I'll find new stuff, but here are my favorites right now.
1. Whitey's Ice Cream, various locations in the Quad Cities: It could be argued that Whitey's is not a restaurant, in that they only serve ice cream. But that person wouldn't have the same priorities as I do, because good Yoda, this stuff is so good. My favorite thing there is a shake made from kona coffee ice cream with chopped up Skor bar (an entire candy bar, in large pieces). It is completely awesome, and so thick they don't even bother to give you a straw. But even their frozen yogurt is good.
2. The River House, Moline: Great location in downtown Moline, just a block away from the Mississippi River, and right next to John Deere Pavillion, where Jack likes to look at the big tractors. They have all kinds of great food -- from bar food like burgers and homemade chips, to fish, to meatloaf. They have great outdoor seating, friendly service, and totally reasonable prices.
3. Belgian Village Inn, Moline: Belgian Village makes this killer Ruben sandwich, a sandwich I ordinarily don't even like. They serve it hot on homemade raisin bread. 4. Centro, Davenport: Very good Italian bistro with fabulous salads and pasta. It's about a block away from my office, but unfortunately the service is kind of slow, so it doesn't work for lunch usually.
5. Lagomarcinos, Moline and Davenport: Um, I must have some kind of problem, because this is indeed the second ice cream place on my list. In fairness, Lago's also serves food, so I am not completely pathetic. The place is adorable, an old fashioned soda and candy shop. I love their tuna melt, but always save room for a hot fudge sundae.

Weird Girl is right that I just moved to where I am now, but I do think I can scrape together my five favorite places of the moment. In time, I know I'll find new stuff, but here are my favorites right now.
1. Whitey's Ice Cream, various locations in the Quad Cities: It could be argued that Whitey's is not a restaurant, in that they only serve ice cream. But that person wouldn't have the same priorities as I do, because good Yoda, this stuff is so good. My favorite thing there is a shake made from kona coffee ice cream with chopped up Skor bar (an entire candy bar, in large pieces). It is completely awesome, and so thick they don't even bother to give you a straw. But even their frozen yogurt is good.
2. The River House, Moline: Great location in downtown Moline, just a block away from the Mississippi River, and right next to John Deere Pavillion, where Jack likes to look at the big tractors. They have all kinds of great food -- from bar food like burgers and homemade chips, to fish, to meatloaf. They have great outdoor seating, friendly service, and totally reasonable prices.
3. Belgian Village Inn, Moline: Belgian Village makes this killer Ruben sandwich, a sandwich I ordinarily don't even like. They serve it hot on homemade raisin bread.
